Ahangama is a small town on the coast road about 20 kilometres east of Galle, where the palms come down to a shoreline of reefs, rock pools and surf breaks. A decade ago it was mostly fishermen; today it is where Sri Lanka’s surf scene and its best cafés meet, without the crowds of Mirissa or Unawatuna.
Come for the waves, which suit total beginners and seasoned surfers within a few kilometres, and stay for the rest: stilt fishermen at dawn, boat trips through the mangroves of Koggala Lake, tea tasting in the hills behind town, and Galle Fort, Mirissa’s whales and the leopards of Yala all within reach.

The reason most people come to Ahangama. Small-group lessons on the sandy beach break at Kabalana, with board, rash vest and an instructor in the water. Most surfers stand up in their first session; go early, before the wind.

Blue whales feed off Sri Lanka’s southern tip, and Mirissa harbour is where the boats leave from. Morning departures in season (roughly November to April) give you the calmest sea and the best chance of whales, spinner dolphins and turtles.
Galle Fort is a living Dutch colonial town inside 17th-century walls, and a local guide turns a pretty stroll into the story of Portuguese, Dutch and British Ceylon. Walk the ramparts, the churches and the old warehouses, then sit down to lunch.
Tea grows at sea level here. Handunugoda, in the hills just behind Ahangama, is famous for its “virgin white tea” and runs a working factory where you can watch leaves wither, roll and dry, then taste a long line of teas.
Yala has one of the highest densities of leopards anywhere, plus elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles. It is a long day from Ahangama (around three hours each way), so pickup is early. The national park entry fee is paid on the day and is not included.
Rice and curry is a dozen small dishes, not one, and this private class in a family home shows you how: coconut sambol, dhal, a fish or chicken curry and whatever the garden is producing. You eat it the local way, by hand from a banana leaf.
