On and under the water

🕒 1.5 hours📍 Kabalana Beach, Ahangama

Beginner Surf Lessons at Kabalana & Ahangama

The reason most people come to Ahangama. Small-group lessons on the sandy beach break at Kabalana, with board, rash vest and an instructor in the water. Most surfers stand up in their first session; go early, before the wind.

  • Small groups on a forgiving beach break
  • Board and rash vest included
  • Several local schools to compare
🕒 2 hours📍 Koggala, 10 minutes from Ahangama

Koggala Lake Boat Safari with Wildlife & Cinnamon Island

A slow boat through the mangroves of Koggala Lake, the big lagoon just west of Ahangama, with a stop on Cinnamon Island to watch the bark being peeled and rolled by hand. Monitor lizards, kingfishers and, with luck, a crocodile.

  • Mangrove channels and island stops
  • Cinnamon peeling demonstration
  • Birds, monitor lizards and maybe a crocodile
🕒 About 4 hours📍 Mirissa harbour, 30 minutes from Ahangama

Mirissa: Whale Watching Tour

Blue whales feed off Sri Lanka’s southern tip, and Mirissa harbour is where the boats leave from. Morning departures in season (roughly November to April) give you the calmest sea and the best chance of whales, spinner dolphins and turtles.

  • Blue whale feeding grounds
  • Spinner dolphins are common
  • Early start, back by lunchtime

Along the coast

📍 Galle Fort, 30 minutes from Ahangama

Galle Fort Walking Tour with Local Guide & Lunch

Galle Fort is a living Dutch colonial town inside 17th-century walls, and a local guide turns a pretty stroll into the story of Portuguese, Dutch and British Ceylon. Walk the ramparts, the churches and the old warehouses, then sit down to lunch.

  • UNESCO-listed fort town
  • Ramparts, lighthouse and Dutch church
  • Lunch with a local guide
🕒 3 hours📍 A family home in Galle (transport included)

Galle: Sri Lankan Cuisine Cooking Experience

Rice and curry is a dozen small dishes, not one, and this private class in a family home shows you how: coconut sambol, dhal, a fish or chicken curry and whatever the garden is producing. You eat it the local way, by hand from a banana leaf.

  • Private class in a family home
  • Several curries and sambols
  • Transport to and from the house
🕒 About 3 hours📍 Pickup in Ahangama, Galle or Weligama

Handunugoda Tea Estate Tasting Tour

Tea grows at sea level here. Handunugoda, in the hills just behind Ahangama, is famous for its “virgin white tea” and runs a working factory where you can watch leaves wither, roll and dry, then taste a long line of teas.

  • Working tea factory
  • Tasting of many teas
  • Pickup from Ahangama

Wildlife and rainforest

🕒 Full day📍 Hotel pickup between Galle and Mirissa

Galle, Unawatuna, Weligama or Mirissa: Yala National Park Safari

Yala has one of the highest densities of leopards anywhere, plus elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles. It is a long day from Ahangama (around three hours each way), so pickup is early. The national park entry fee is paid on the day and is not included.

  • Open-jeep game drive with a tracker
  • Private air-conditioned transfer
  • Park fee extra, paid at the gate
🕒 About 7 hours📍 Pickup in Galle and along the coast

Udawalawe National Park Wildlife Safari from Galle

If elephants matter more than leopards, Udawalawe is the better park: herds are almost guaranteed, the grassland is open and it is a little closer than Yala. Most trips add the Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned calves are fed before release.

  • Wild elephant herds
  • Elephant Transit Home visit
  • Hotel pickup and lunch

Booking questions

Which Ahangama tour is best value?

A beginner surf lesson at Kabalana and a Koggala Lake boat safari are both inexpensive, close by and memorable. For a bigger day out, whale watching from Mirissa in season is hard to beat.

Do tours pick up from hotels in Ahangama?

Most day trips (whale watching, safaris, the tea estate and Sinharaja) include pickup from hotels along the coast, including Ahangama. Check the pickup details on each listing.

Should I book in advance?

For whale watching and safaris in high season (December to April), yes, a few days ahead. Surf lessons and lake trips can usually be booked a day before.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Boat operators cancel when the sea is too rough, and you are normally offered another date or a refund. Most GetYourGuide tours also have free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
