Two stilt fishermen sitting on their poles above the waves at Ahangama

Things to Do in & around Ahangama

Surf in the morning, a lagoon or a fort in the afternoon, and the sun going down behind the stilt fishermen. Here is everything worth your time, near and far.

Ahangama is small, but it sits in the middle of the most interesting stretch of Sri Lanka’s south coast. Within ten minutes you have reef breaks and a forgiving beach break, the stilt fishermen of Koggala, a lagoon full of islands and a working tea estate. Within 40 minutes you have Galle Fort, the calm bay at Unawatuna and Mirissa, where the whale-watching boats leave.

Inland, the national parks of Yala and Udawalawe and the Sinharaja rainforest make long but unforgettable day trips. If you only have a few days, see our ranked list of the best tours.

How to plan your days

The rhythm of a good Ahangama trip follows the sea. Mornings are for surfing, snorkelling and boat trips, when the wind is light and the water calm. The middle of the day is hot: retreat to a café, a tea estate or the shade of Galle Fort’s streets. Late afternoon is for the ramparts, the beach and the stilt fishermen at sunset.

Tip: Book whale watching and any safari for early in your stay. If the sea is rough or a park is closed, you will still have time to rebook.

Getting around

Tuk-tuks are everywhere and cheap for short hops; agree the fare first or use a ride-hailing app where it works. The coastal train is slow but scenic and stops at Koggala, Ahangama, Weligama and Mirissa. For day trips inland, a tour with pickup or a car and driver is far easier than public transport.
