Whale Watching

Blue whales off Sri Lanka’s southern tip

The deep water off Dondra Head, Sri Lanka’s southernmost point, is one of the most reliable places in the world to see blue whales. Boats leave Mirissa harbour at dawn in season and spend three to four hours at sea, looking for blows on the horizon.

Sightings are good but never guaranteed, and the sea can be rough. Choose an operator that keeps a respectful distance from the whales, and go as early in the season and the day as you can.

Insider tips

  • Take seasickness tablets an hour before you board, and sit on deck near the back.

  • Outside the season (May to October) the sea is rough and few boats run here.
  • Choose an operator that keeps its distance; chasing whales is bad for them and illegal.
