A Sri Lankan leopard walking through scrub in Yala National Park

Yala National Park

Leopards, elephants and sloth bears

Yala, on the dry south-east coast, is where most people see their first Sri Lankan leopard. Its scrub, lagoons and rocky outcrops are also home to elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, water buffalo and a long list of birds.

From Ahangama it is a long day: around three hours each way by road. Full-day tours leave very early to reach the park gate for the morning drive, when animals are most active.

Is Yala worth it from Ahangama?

If seeing a leopard is high on your list, yes, but it is a long day. For elephants alone, Udawalawe is closer and more reliable.
