Palms, rocks and surf along the coast at Koggala, next to Ahangama

Where to Stay in Ahangama

Small town, big choice: surf hotels on Kabalana Beach, boutique stays along the coast road and retreats in the green hills around Koggala Lake.

Ahangama stretches for a few kilometres along the coast road, so where you stay shapes your days. The beach side, around Kabalana and the centre of town, puts you within walking distance of the surf, the cafés and the sunset. The hills and lake shore inland, towards Koggala, are quieter and greener, with bigger gardens and pools, but you will rely on tuk-tuks.

There are no big chain resorts here. Expect boutique hotels, surf lodges, villas and guesthouses. Book early for December to March, when the best places fill up weeks ahead.

Tips for booking

  • Road noise: the coast road is busy with buses. Ask for a room at the back or on the sea side.
  • Air-con: nights are warm all year; most travellers want it.
  • Pool: much of the coast is reef and surf, so a pool matters if you want an easy swim.
  • Long stays: many places discount weekly and monthly stays outside peak season. Ask.
  • Monsoon: from May to October prices drop, but some beachfront places close for renovation.
