Koggala Lake

Mangroves, island temples and cinnamon by boat

Koggala Lake is a large, shallow lagoon behind the beach at Koggala, about ten minutes west of Ahangama. Mangroves line its edges, monitor lizards bask on the banks and kingfishers, cormorants and herons work the water. Small islands are scattered across it, and a boat trip to two or three of them is the classic half-day out from Ahangama.

The lake also has literary fame: Madol Duwa, one of its islands, is the setting of Martin Wickramasinghe’s much-loved Sinhala children’s novel, and the writer’s birthplace, now the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum, is in Koggala village.

Top things to do: Koggala Lake

Take a boat safari

Boats leave from jetties along the main road. A two-hour trip threads the mangroves and stops at the islands; go in the early morning for birds and calm water. See the best Koggala tours.

Watch cinnamon being peeled on Cinnamon Island

A family on one island demonstrates how cinnamon bark is scraped, peeled and rolled into quills, and you get a cup of cinnamon tea. There is a shop at the end; buying is optional.

Paddle a kayak

The quieter channels are better seen from a kayak, without an engine. Some trips combine the two.

Visit the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum

A small, pleasant museum of village life and the writer’s family home, set in a shady garden in Koggala.
