Sinharaja Forest Reserve protects the largest remaining patch of Sri Lanka’s lowland rainforest and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. It is a hotspot for endemic species: birds such as the Sri Lanka blue magpie, plus lizards, frogs and butterflies found nowhere else.
Visits are on foot with a licensed guide. From Ahangama it is a full day: around two and a half hours each way to the southern entrances, then a few hours of trekking.
