The long sandy curve of Weligama beach

Weligama

A wide sandy bay and Sri Lanka’s favourite place to learn to surf

Weligama means “sandy village”, and its long, curving bay has the gentlest surf on the coast. Rows of soft-top boards line the beach, and on a good day there are more learners in the water than fishermen on the sand.

The town itself is a working fishing port, with painted outrigger canoes pulled up under the palms. Just offshore sits Taprobane, a tiny island with a single villa built by a French count in the 1920s.

Top things to do: Weligama

Learn to surf

The bay’s waves are slow and mellow; ideal for a first lesson, especially when Kabalana is too big. See surfing in Ahangama.

Watch the fishing boats come in

The harbour end of the bay is busiest in the early morning, when the night’s catch is landed and sold.

See Taprobane Island

Visible from the beach, the island is private; you can admire it from the shore at low tide.

Insider tips
