The view over Mirissa bay and Parrot Rock from the rocks above the beach

Mirissa

Palm-topped hills, a party beach and the whale-watching harbour

Mirissa, about 30 minutes east of Ahangama, is the south coast’s best-known beach town. Its curving bay is backed by bars and restaurants, and a red-soil headland covered with palms, Coconut Tree Hill, is one of the most photographed spots in Sri Lanka.

It is also the base for whale watching. The continental shelf drops away close to shore here, bringing blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins within reach of a morning boat trip.

Top things to do: Mirissa

Go whale watching

Boats leave the harbour early in the morning in season (roughly November to April). See whale watching from Mirissa.

Climb Coconut Tree Hill

A short walk from the beach. Come at sunrise or late afternoon; midday is hot and crowded.

Climb Parrot Rock

A small rock island at the end of the beach, reachable on foot at low tide. The view back over the bay is worth the scramble.

Stay for the evening

Mirissa beach comes alive after dark with seafood barbecues and bars on the sand: livelier than anything in Ahangama.
